This is a classic Yunnan black tea, great daily drinker, warming to the body and consistent in taste.
The Bai Hao varietal is mostly used for bud heavy teas, but we opted for a 1 bud/2 leaves production. It doesn't look as fancy but you get a much more intense mouthfeel. The tea soup is thick and warms the body. The tea was dried at high temperature, which give a very light roasted touch, often akin to a chocolate fragrance.
This tea comes in 1 kg air-tight pouches.
At the border with Myanmar, near Mengma town, a forgotten tea estate is trying to survive. The area is hard to access because of its proximity to the border. The tea estate was established 30 years ago and provides jobs to the locals. It mainly grows the Bai Hao varietal, which is well-suited for beautiful looking leaves, especially when high grades are harvested: the buds have lots of hairs, they display a bright white when processed as green tea and a golden shine when made into black tea.
In order to survive, the tea estate produces mainly cheap green tea for the Western Chinese market (Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai). But we think it deserves a better fate. Located at an altitude of 1500 meters, it produces teas that punch well above its price point.
